Title
Mayor Goode Waves From Motorcade
Subject
Mayor W, Wilson Goode
Description
W. Wilson Goode and his wife, Velma, wave to supporters after he was elected Mayor of Philadelphia. Goode was the first African-American mayor in the history of Philadelphia. Given the turmoil of the Rizzo years, there was hope that Goode would show a gentler touch to the issues facing the city. Goode was briefed on the situation with MOVE on Osage Avenue shortly after taking office, but elected not to do anything about them at first. He decided that it was not worth the political risk to engage violently with MOVE unless MOVE left him with no other choice.
